rekləˈmāSH(ə)n/ (noun):
process of claiming something back or of reasserting a right.
Navigating the world while Black presents its own nuance that others will never know or understand. And that’s ok. But what’s also ok is rewriting our story and sharing it powerfully.
Enter the RECLAMATION series: My artistic expression about navigating the world while Black and reclaiming ourselves: our strength, love, joy, self-expression, and freedom. All to become the greatest alchemists the world will ever know—turning painful moments and stereotypes into a golden opportunity of empowerment.
In the first act here, inspired by Sensei Le Fox's "The Durag Song," I created a visual ode to the Durag and Black culture.
Stuntin' with my durag on. By the ocean.
Let it flap in the wind (fly). In slow motion.
The Durag, an essential item to black hair care and culture, has been criticized and brought under stereotypical scrutiny over the years. The song and visual transmutes the negativity and brings light to the culture.
Other cultural nods featured in the video:
"Red Drink" • Jazz Vinyl • Black Artists on Vogue • Street Art Africa book
This is the first in the RECLAMATION series. More to come.
