MY ROLE: CREATIVE DIRECTION AND PRODUCTION
VIDEOGRAPHY: Chuy Guttierez OF BosLabs
"Sounds of NYC” follows a medical student during her travels through New York and the iconic sights and sounds she encounters. The video, which was a prelude to the 2021 Commencement Ceremonies at the Icahn School of Medicine, was an ode to the city and our surprise gift to the graduates, as a reminder to them that wherever they go, they will never forget where they studied and lived during their tenure at the School.
This initiative turned out to be a last minute idea to add a little pizzazz and surprise to the graduates who were in the throes of disappointment and uncertainty in light of the pandemic. For this production, I had to move fast and be agile. I scouted and connected all of the artists through Instagram; created the project timeline; and selected the set locations. The video was shot in two days, with a quick edit wrap shortly following.
The video debuted in time for the ceremony in May 2021 and was so well-received that we were asked to create a second version for the following month's Commencement. For the newer version, I added an additional artist to the talent list, and requested a rearrangement of the video for a different flow.
The second version is also on the School's YouTube page, and much like its predecessor, was a welcome surprise to the graduates, their families, and the supporting staff and faculty.
